Which measurements decide my underwear size?

What does the US number on panty tags (5, 6, 7…) mean?
It is a hip-based ladder: for the common sizes, the tag number is roughly your hip in inches minus 30 — hip 35" → size 5, 36–37" → size 6, 38–39" → size 7. From size 8 up most brands stop extending the numbers and use the letter scale (L, XL, XXL), which is the pairing the US column here follows: XS = 5 through XXL = 10. Brands shift a step either way.
Why does the letter size differ from my US dress size?
Underwear is cut from stretchier, lighter fabric and sits closer to the body, so brands scale letters around your dress size rather than copying it — a US 8 dress can wear S or M briefs depending on hip measurement. Match the chart, not the intuition.
What if my waist and hip suggest different sizes?
Take the larger of the two recommendations. Elastic recovers a slightly loose waist better than a too-small hip seam recovers a tight fit, so sizing to the hip is the safer call.
Are EU underwear sizes the same as EU dress sizes?
They follow the same 32/36/40… numbering but brands offset them by roughly two steps for underwear. The EU column here already reflects the common underwear labeling.
Should I size up for shapewear or seamless styles?
No — going down causes roll-down and digging; most shapewear uses your true size with high-stretch fabric doing the work. When in doubt, follow your measured chart size and the brand’s guidance, since sizing varies by brand and style.
