Frequently asked questions
What does a URL slug look like?
A slug is the human-readable part of a URL: lowercase words separated by hyphens, with no spaces or special characters — for example “My 2nd Café & Bar!” becomes my-2nd-cafe-and-bar.
How are accented letters handled?
Accented characters are folded to their base letter first (é → e, ü → u), and a few extra letters map to combinations (ø → o, æ → ae, ß → ss). That keeps slugs ASCII-safe while staying readable.
What happens to ampersands and apostrophes?
“&” is expanded to the word “and” before the rest is cleaned up, and apostrophes are dropped (“don’t” → dont). Everything else that is not a letter or digit collapses into a single separator.
Can I use underscores instead of hyphens?
Yes — pick the underscore separator. Hyphens are the most common choice for URLs and are what search engines expect, but underscores are handy for filenames.
What about characters outside the Latin alphabet?
Letters without a Latin base form (Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Cyrillic and so on) are dropped, so text made only of those characters produces an empty slug. The tool is designed for Latin-script content.
