Frequently asked questions
How does this strikethrough work without formatting?
It inserts U+0336 (COMBINING LONG STROKE OVERLAY) after every character, including spaces. The stroke is a real character that overlays the previous one, so the crossed-out look travels with the text even where formatting is impossible.
Where does strikethrough text actually stick?
In plain-text surfaces: chat messages, social posts, task lists, commit messages, notes apps. Markdown-only editors will show the raw combining marks instead of rendering them, and some old form fields render them unevenly.
Why are spaces also crossed out?
Crossing spaces keeps the stroke continuous between words. If you prefer gaps, delete the floating stroke characters after pasting, or strike each word separately and join them with clean spaces.
Can I remove the strikethrough later?
Yes — paste the text back here and delete the U+0336 marks manually, or use any “strip combining characters” tool. There is no built-in undo once the characters have been copied into another app.
Is it different from Markdown’s ~~double tilde~~?
Completely. Markdown strikethrough is a formatting instruction that only renders where Markdown is processed. Combining-strike text is self-contained Unicode, so it looks crossed out everywhere, even in a plain notepad.
